Houston brothers spend days off helping others in need

Daniel and Martin Hernandez have full-time jobs, but they spend their days off working to help others who are struggling financially.

HOUSTON — On a hot and humid Houston morning, brothers Daniel and Martin Hernandez are unloading equipment, setting up their GoPro and getting ready for another day of work. But this work doesn’t cost a dime.

“We always offer it for free,” Daniel said.

Martin, who works for a chemical company, and Daniel, a landscaper, dedicate their days off to providing free pressure washing services to Houstonians in need. The act of kindness is an extension of their lawn care work, which is also offered free of charge once a week to people who are struggling.

“You never know what people are going through,” Martin told KHOU 11. “I know it’s just pressure washing a driveway, but it can really mean a lot to people and brighten up their day. It can change the way they look at life.”

The idea started four years ago when Daniel and his father, who offer paid lawn care services, met a client who shared that she couldn’t afford her medication.

“From there, we saw the look on her face,” Daniel said.

That moment inspired them to do her lawn for free to cut back on paid jobs so they could dedicate at least one day a week to clearing overgrown lots free of charge.

They recently took care of an overgrown lot on Granite Street after seeing it on KHOU 11.

The free pressure washing followed soon after, and the family began filming their work for YouTube. Their two channels now have more than 450,000 followers each.

They say their goal is simple: to spread kindness.

“We always think about how we can possibly encourage people to go out there and help people out and just spread kindness around the city of Houston,” Daniel explained.
