Houston apartment residents see improvements in rodent control

All units at Cullen Park and Wesley Square apartments have been inspected. It’s one step towards solving the maintenance and pest problems at the complexes.

HOUSTON — Residents at two south Houston apartment complexes will start seeing overdue changes. City leaders started getting involved after KHOU 11 reported on the rodent problems.

“The people there are really happy because, you know, they felt voiceless,” councilwoman Carolyn Evans-Shabazz said.

She said all units at Cullen Park and Wesley Square apartments have been inspected. It’s one step towards a solution to the maintenance and pest problems at the complex.

“Now they’re abating them, they say those that were immediate safety hazards were immediately abated, but we’re looking for it to be at least a two-week process,” Councilmember Evans-Shabazz said.

The goal is to replace appliances, fix doors and get rid of the rodents. Residents at Wesley Square told KHOU 11 News on Monday that inspections were recently conducted at their units, with staff checking safety equipment, including fire alarms.

Marquis Management operates both complexes. We reached out to them on Monday, and we’re still waiting to hear back about their plans.

Evans-Shabazz said she is communicating with those involved.

“I actually spoke with the owner this morning, who just assured me that first and foremost, he was very disturbed that it got to that point,” she said.

She tells us there is also some tenant responsibility to keep common areas like a dumpster clean, to prevent issues like rats from popping up.

Residents are encouraged to keep filing maintenance requests with management if there are any issues.

If further intervention is needed, Evans-Shabazz said residents can contact her office.
