Sunday is 713 Day, a celebration in Houston of the city’s oldest area code. It’s also a chance for freebies and discounts.
HOUSTON — Sunday is July 13, which is also known as 713 Day here in Houston. It’s a day to celebrate all things that are Houston.
The day is named after the city’s oldest area code, and here’s a little history.
The 713 area code was established back in 1947 as part of the North American numbering plan, and it was Houston’s only area code up until 1996. That was the year the Bayou City was split in two with most suburbs outside Beltway 8 getting a new area code — 281 — and by that point, the area was growing fast and a third area code — 832 — was added only three years later.
Then came 346 which was added to the mix in 2014 and in 2025, 621 was added to the growing list.
But 713 will always be the OG. And because of 713 Day, there are deals all over the town the area code reps.
Karbach Brewing Company is celebrating with a live performance from legendary Houston rapper Lil’ Flip and Friends. Doors open Sunday at 3 p.m. The free event will also have local vendors and a DJ spinning Houston classics. Lil’ Flip and Friends hit the stage at – of course — 7:13 p.m. If you get there early you can snag a limited edition 713 glass, while supplies last.
Meow Wolf Houston and Saint Arnold Brewing Company are teaming up to throw a 713 block party on Sunday. The free outdoor event runs from noon to 4 p.m. at both Saint Arnold and Meow Wolf. They are just across the street from each other on Lyons Avenue, just outside of downtown.
At Saint Arnold, there will be commemorative 713 Day pint glasses for sale, local vendors, and several live performances.
Over at Meow Wolf, they’ll have a new activation exhibit and exclusive merch.
The block party outside Meow Wolf is free but if you want to check out their full exhibition inside, you’ll have to buy a ticket.
The Houston Dynamo is celebrating 713 Day with no fees on tickets. Fans can buy tickets without fees for any remaining regular season home matches. This offer is only available on Sunday. The next home match is on July 29.
The Houston Humane Society is hosting a 713 Sunday Funday bash. The clinic is offering $7 rabies vaccines and office visits will cost $13. You don’t need to book an appointment to get this offer. The clinic hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. And if you’re looking for a new pet, right next door, the adoption center is offering a $50 BOGO kitten special. Adopt one kitten one year or younger, and you can get a second kitten for free. The Humane Society is located on Almeda Road near the Beltway.
