A 13-year-old girl is recovering in North Texas after a wild hog attacked her, causing leg injuries that required 44 stitches, according to her family.

ERATH COUNTY, Texas — A 13-year-old girl is recovering in North Texas after a wild hog attacked her Friday morning.

According to a news release from the Erath County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and medical personnel responded to a private property on US 281 near Morgan Mill to the report of a wild hog attacking a human around 7:15 a.m.

ECSO said it was discovered that a 13-year-old girl was taking her dogs outside when she was attacked by a hog that had emerged from thick brush. The girl’s leg was injured, officials said.

According to ECSO, the girl’s father was on the scene and was able to provide immediate first aid until EMS arrived. The sheriff’s office said the girl was conscious and able to walk to the ambulance on her own power. She was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

ECSO noted that the hog was chased off by the girl’s dogs. In a Facebook post, the girl’s father praised the two dogs for their quick actions.

“I can say if it wasn’t for our sweet Luna and Ozzy things could have been so much worse, but they immediately realized she was in danger and Ozzy stayed by her side while Luna chased the hog away from our daughter,” the post read.

The father went on to say he applied a tourniquet to his daughter’s leg while calling first responders. He added that the girl’s injury required 44 stitches.
