Henderson County calls for state guidance amid data center concerns

Henderson County seeks state guidance and authority over data centers amid community concerns about resource impact and economic benefits.

ATHENS, Texas — The Henderson County Commissioners Court passed a resolution asking the state for better guidance and more authority when it comes to data centers in local communities.

Before the meeting started, Henderson County Judge Wade McKinney said this was the largest crowd he’s seen in his 28 years. Roughly three dozen people signed up to speak.

Discussion lasted about an hour and a half. Many speakers said they are concerned about the impact large-scale data centers could have.

Several people said they are concerned about power usage, water resources, noise and long-term infrastructure demands. Others questioned how much local communities would benefit economically from the projects.

County commissioners say they understand and agree with the concerns because they live in the community too. However, they say responsibility largely falls on the state, adding that local officials have limited authority over the issue.
