Gunfire in southeast Houston leads residents to call for action

Southeast Houston residents said they’re living in fear as gunfire at night has become a regular occurrence in their neighborhood.

HOUSTON — Southeast Houston residents said they’ve been living in fear ever since gunfire at night became a regular occurrence in their neighborhood.

Community members near Wayside and Old Spanish Trail, especially around Fonde Park, said the sound of gunshots has become all too common, making them feel unsafe even inside their own homes.

“We no longer feel safe at our homes,” Karina Blest said.

Blest is a resident who is helping organize a community town hall this weekend.

“People come out here and use this bayou like a shooting range,” she said.

Resident Manuel Feliciano said he’s also noticed gunfire.

“To be honest, I have [heard a lot of gunshots],” Feliciano said.

The area has seen at least two major shooting-related incidents in the last six months. In one case, stray bullets flew into nearby homes.

In another case, a dispute between neighbors turned deadly when one of them was shot and killed.

Blest and others said they’ve repeatedly reported the issue, but feel the response from law enforcement has been lacking.

“Our biggest concern is that we’re not seeing any action,” she said. “What goes up comes down—and it could kill someone in their home.”

Residents hope to find solutions at a town hall meeting planned for Saturday. Houston police officers, a city council member, state lawmakers, and possibly a representative from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are expected to attend.
