A mysterious late-night transfer has landed Jeffrey Epstein’s accomplice at a Texas prison facility that’s raised eyebrows
BRYAN, Texas — Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted accomplice of the late Jeffrey Epstein, has been quietly transferred to a minimum-security federal prison in Texas, raising questions from victims’ advocates and criminal justice experts.
Maxwell, 62, is now housed at Federal Prison Camp Bryan, a 635-bed facility for nonviolent offenders located less than 100 miles from Houston. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons has not explained why Maxwell was moved from a medium-security prison in Tallahassee, Florida, where she had been serving a 20-year sentence for child sex trafficking.
Prison reform advocate and consultant Holli Coulman said the transfer was highly unusual.
“Being transferred under the cover of darkness, in a Bureau of Prisons van, with no involvement from the U.S. Marshals — I’ve never seen anything like it,” Coulman told KHOU 11. “This level of control over the transfer suggests someone wanted it kept quiet.”
Federal Prison Camp Bryan is known for housing white-collar and nonviolent inmates. It currently houses other high-profile prisoners, including Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” cast member Jen Shah. According to the Bureau of Prisons, the facility emphasizes work and education programs and has a low staff-to-inmate ratio.
The transfer comes just days after Maxwell reportedly met with Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco as part of the Justice Department’s ongoing review of the Epstein case. Her attorney said Maxwell answered all questions over two days.
Victims of Epstein and their families condemned the transfer in a statement released Thursday.
“It is with horror and outrage that we object to the preferential treatment convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell has received,” the statement read. “Maxwell is a sexual predator who physically assaulted minor children on multiple occasions, and she should never be shown any leniency. Yet, without any notification to the victims, the government overnight moved Maxwell to a minimum-security luxury prison in Texas. This is the justice system failing victims right before our eyes.”
Maxwell, a British socialite, was convicted in 2021 of grooming and trafficking underage girls who were then abused by Epstein. She is scheduled for release in July 2037.
The White House and Department of Justice continue to face mounting pressure to release additional information about the Epstein investigation, including files related to his death and the identities of others involved in his criminal network.
