GARLAND, Texas — The Garland Police Department is investigating after a man died following a medical emergency that occurred shortly after he was detained by officers.
According to a news release from Garland police, officers responded at about 3 p.m. Thursday to the 1300 block of Marketplace Drive after receiving multiple calls from concerned citizens about a “completely nude” man in a public area.
When officers arrived, they found the man visibly naked outside a restaurant. Police said the man was uncooperative when officers attempted to speak with him.
As officers tried to detain the man, he began fighting them and spoke “incoherently,” according to the department. Officers were eventually able to take him into custody.
Shortly afterward, the man suffered a medical emergency and was taken to a hospital by Garland Fire Department medics.
At about 1 p.m. Friday, police said hospital staff informed investigators the man had died.
“An independent investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the department said in a statement. “The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct a full examination and release the official cause of death.”
The man’s identity has not yet been released. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
