Galveston could become U.S. shipbuilding hub with new Gulf Coast investments

Rodger Rees, port director and CEO of Galveston Wharves, said during the Greater Houston Port Bureau’s July 10 luncheon that an undisclosed Japanese company is considering investing in shipbuilding assets in the Galveston area.

“We’re anticipating a new (shipbuilding) industry in Galveston,” Rees said. “They’re looking at Texas. We’ve got another company from Japan doing the same thing.

“So it’s happening; I think it’s becoming known that we’re going to be the leader of this. We’re really excited about that.”
