Fulshear police warn against jumping into a lake due to safety concerns involving wildlife and pollution.
FULSHEAR, Texas — Reports of children jumping into the lake from the Cross Creek bridge have raised a variety of safety concerns for Fulshear police. The department released a Facebook post advising against jumping into the lake at Skycreek Crossing and Cross Creek Bend Lane.
Although children are looking for fun ways to pass the time this summer, the department wants to raise awareness about the potential dangers they may face.
“While this may seem like a fun activity, it presents serious safety, environmental, and legal concerns,” police said.
First, the water in the lake may contain fertilizer runoff, which can be harmful to skin and overall health.
Second, there have been reports of dangerous wildlife in the lake. As children try to beat the heat by jumping into the water, they may encounter animals such as the occasional alligator or water moccasin. These animals can be aggressive toward people who enter their habitat, making for an unpredictable and risky swim.
Third, children may be charged with trespassing, as the lake belongs to the local municipal utility district and is not open to the public.
Fourth, the water may contain hidden dangers such as rocks, sudden depth changes and sharp debris, which can cause serious injuries.
The department issued these warnings to help keep the Cross Creek Ranch community safe. Officers urge guardians to ensure their children understand all the risks before deciding to jump into the water.
