Fire at Bolivar Peninsula bird sanctuary sparked by lightning

Officials said the fire was in an inaccessible area of the sanctuary between Highway 87 and Loop 108.

BOLIVAR PENINSULA, Texas — A lightning strike Friday night sparked a fire at a bird sanctuary on Bolivar Peninsula, officials said.

The Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department first posted about the fire at the Houston Audubon sanctuary shortly before 10 p.m. Friday. At 11 p.m., they said the fire burned about 21 acres.

In a social media comment Saturday morning, the fire department said they were still monitoring the fire as of 7 a.m.

The flames did not threaten any homes. 

Officials said the fire was in an inaccessible area of the sanctuary between Highway 87 and Loop 108.
