Elevator have residents at Spring assisted living complex concerned

They said health issues make taking the stairs dangerous and difficult.

HOUSTON — Residents at a senior living facility in Spring say their concerns are growing over an elevator they rely on at their complex that has been out of service for several months.

Multiple residents at Spring Trace Apartments told KHOU 11 one of the elevators at the complex has not been working since about April.

Two residents spoke to KHOU 11 on the condition of anonymity as they expressed concern over potential repercussions for speaking out.

“[It’s] never been this bad,” one resident said in an interview.

The residents say they and others rely on the elevator near their units — which is one of three in the complex — as taking the stairs is difficult due to age and health issues.

“I depend on it a lot,” a resident said. “You know, it’s been hard for me on those stairs, up and down, up and down, up and down.”

“We have to really be careful that we don’t stumble,” another resident said.

The residents said they have tried getting more clarity and answers from the property management but have been unsatisfied with what they’ve heard so far.

KHOU 11 spoke with FDI Management Group, which said two of the three elevators on the property are fully operational. One had malfunctioned over the weekend but was repaired and operational on Monday.

Residents said they do use the other elevators in the complex but the distance can become a concern due to their mobility issues when hauling groceries or in an emergency where a quick exit is necessary.

“We can use the elevator on the other side,” a resident said. “But it makes it hard, you know, to walk down there sometimes, you can’t even walk that far down.”

The elevator that has been out of operation for months is in need of a new valve, according to FDI Management Group. The repair to get it up and running again is expected to be completed within the week, but they noted that they are at the mercy of the company that repairs the elevators.
