Police are investigating after someone crashed a car containing “evidence of an explosive device” into the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, Oregon.
PORTLAND, Ore. — One person was found dead after crashing a car containing suspected “explosive devices” into an Oregon building Saturday morning.
Firefighters arrived to the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland, Oregon just before 3 a.m. and found a vehicle on fire. After extinguishing the flames, crews found one person dead inside. The Portland Police Bureau said “evidence of an explosive device” was found in the vehicle, prompting the Explosive Disposal Unit to join the investigation.
The driver was described as a “disgruntled former employee” who drove a rented car into the building and around the first floor before setting off the explosive devices, the Oregonian reported.
Authorities have not said what specifically was found inside the vehicle that prompted the response, but a KGW crew at the scene observed what appeared to be six burned propane tanks.
The club announced they are closed until further notice and are expecting a “prolonged closure” due to the “serious incident.” No other injuries have been reported and the building was closed at the time of the crash.
The club and police have asked people to stay out of the area and said all programs, services and scheduled activities have been canceled.
Saturday’s incident comes less than a month after another vehicle crashed near the club’s front entrance, though police say there is no indication the two incidents are related.
The MAC is the self described largest private athletic and social club in the United States and has more than 21,000 members, according to their website.
No other information is known at this time.
