Democrat Joe Jaworski joins Texas Attorney General’s race

The former Galveston mayor is the second Democrat this week to launch a campaign for Texas Attorney General.

DALLAS — Former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski launched his campaign for Texas Attorney General on Thursday, the second Democrat to do so this week.

“For too long, Texas leaders have focused on political games and culture wars while ignoring the real needs of our families,” Jaworski said in a statement. “As Attorney General, I will fight to ensure our children grow up safe, healthy and free, rather than suffering the consequences of political agendas.”

He cited the Republican response to tragedies like Camp Mystic flash floods, Winter Storm Uri in 2021 and the Uvalde school shootings in deciding to run for the seat.

This is Jaworski’s second attempt at the seat. He ran for the nomination in 2022 but lost in a runoff to Rochelle Garza from Brownsville.

“As communities across Central Texas look to recover and heal from the deadly July 4th weekend floods, Texas needs an Attorney General who fights to protect their lives and their rights during difficult times,” added Jaworski. “I have the experience needed to ensure families can return home, feel safe, and rebuild stronger.”

Jaworski served as Galveston mayor from 2010 to 2012.

On Tuesday, state Sen. Nathan Johnson, D-Dallas, was the first Democrat to enter the race.

He and Johnson will meet in the Democratic Primary next March. Other candidates might still join the race since the filing deadline remains months away.
