Dallas Police is mourning Sergeant Joshua Boykin, who died from injuries in a May 16 plane crash, while off-duty with two colleagues, the department said.
DALLAS — The Dallas Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own after a veteran officer died from injuries sustained in a recent plane crash.
Sergeant Joshua Boykin, a 19-year veteran of the department, died Friday as a result of injuries suffered in an airplane accident on May 16, according to Dallas police.
Boykin was among three off-duty Dallas police officers injured when a small plane crashed in a large open field in Forney just after midnight. Authorities said the group had been traveling privately to Oklahoma for a comedy show when the aircraft experienced engine failure, according to preliminary findings from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The plane went down just three minutes from reaching a runway in Lancaster.
Boykin suffered the most serious injuries in the crash, including significant spinal trauma. The other two officers injured have not been publicly identified. The FAA investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
In a statement posted to social media, the department said Boykin served the people of Dallas with “honor, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to public service,” earning the respect of both colleagues and the community throughout his career.
Those who knew him say his personality stood out just as much as his service. Senior Cpl. Tim Cordova, a longtime friend, described Boykin as fun-loving and spirited, adding that he embraced a cowboy lifestyle when he was off the job.
