Two prominent Dallas companies will contribute to a key aspect of the multibillion-dollar redevelopment of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.
The agreement is for pre-construction and construction for the restoration of The Black Academy of Arts and Letters, the fourth component of the seven-component convention center master plan, in an amount not to exceed roughly $695,363.
During convention center construction, The Black Academy of Arts and Letters is expected to relocate to The Women’s Museum, a vacant building in Fair Park. Work has already begun on renovations to the Fair Park site and the arts group is expected to move in by the end of August. It should remain in this temporary home for three years and return to its permanent home in the convention center once renovations are complete.
The overall cost of the convention center redevelopment project has been estimated at $3.3 billion to $3.5 billion. The work will nearly double the center’s ballroom space, expand exhibition space and boost total sellable space to roughly 1.03 million square feet. It will also overhaul the unused Dallas Memorial Auditorium to turn it into the future home of the WNBA’s Dallas Wings.
