An officer will have to undergo surgery after being injured while arresting a teen suspect during a Corsicana burglary incident.
CORSICANA, Texas — A Corsicana police officer was injured early Sunday while attempting to arrest a juvenile suspect during a burglary investigation, authorities said.
According to a press release from the Corsicana Police Department, Officer Tommy Ordonez was patrolling around 2:30 a.m. when he spotted an ongoing vehicle burglary in the 700 block of South 7th Street. The rear window of the car had been shattered, and one suspect ran away as Officer Ordonez approached.
Police said Ordonez was able to chase down the suspect, a 16-year-old, and arrest him. During the arrest, a struggle ensued, and broken glass from the car cut deeply into Ordonez’s forearm, the release states. Despite his injury, Ordonez was able to subdue and arrest the suspect.
Police recovered two handguns from the 16-year-old and found a third firearm at the scene. The teen is currently being held in a juvenile detention facility in Longview and faces multiple charges, including burglary of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, unlawful carrying of a weapon and evading arrest.
A second suspect, a 17-year-old boy, attempted to leave the scene but was arrested after a short pursuit by Officer Corporal Garrett Harrell. Police said he was taken into custody near the area and booked into the Navarro County Jail with charges of burglary of a motor vehicle and evading arrest.
Both individuals may face additional charges as the investigation continues, the department said.
Officer Ordonez was transported to Parkland Hospital, where he is in good condition. He has been admitted and is scheduled to undergo surgery for his injury on Monday and is expected to make a full recovery, the department said.
Corsicana Police said the investigation is ongoing.
