As storms ramp up, so do scams. With hurricane season days away here are some tips to protect yourself from contractor scams.
HOUSTON, Texas — As the official start of hurricane season approaches, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning Texans to be on alert for contractor scams, especially after recent storms across the state.
The BBB says so-called storm chasers often show up at homeowners’ doors immediately after a storm, offering quick repairs. While some may seem helpful, not all are licensed or trustworthy, and they often pressure residents into signing contracts on the spot.
Last year alone, Texans reported losing more than $200,000 to home improvement scams.
Here’s how to protect yourself:
- Never pay upfront. Reputable contractors won’t ask for full payment before starting the job.
- Get multiple quotes. Aim for at least three estimates so you can compare prices and services.
- Research companies. Use BBB’s online tools to find licensed, vetted contractors with reviews.
- Set a timeline. Knowing when work should begin and end helps keep things on track.
- Insist on a written contract. Always get details in writing — including scope of work, payment terms, and timelines.
- Be cautious of pressure tactics. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
