GALVESTON, Texas — A shrimp boat that spent nearly two weeks stranded on Crystal Beach is back in the water after a dramatic rescue effort that drew national attention and a large coastal crowd.
The vessel, known as the Buccaneer, had become a social media sensation as it sat beached along the Bolivar Peninsula. On Wednesday, crews and volunteers came together with heavy equipment to finally free it.
Massive effort draws crowd
The recovery operation brought together the United Cajun Navy, volunteers, influencers and crews operating large machinery, including excavators.
With a crowd watching from the shore, the Buccaneer was pushed and pulled through the sand and back into the water.
The effort also drew strong community support for the boat’s owner, Shane Rilat, as people rallied around restoring his livelihood.
Emotional moment as boat floats
For many watching, the moment the boat broke free was unforgettable.
“My heart was racing so fast, as if I had drunk 40 energy drinks,” said Nikki Johnson-Kunz, known as the “Texas Shrimp Diva.” “When you saw the boat start to float and knew it had made it past the sand bar, that feeling was incredible.”
What happens next
The Buccaneer has now been moved to dry dock, where repairs will begin.
Supporters say the goal is to get the boat back out on the water soon, catching Gulf shrimp once again.

Those involved in the rescue say the operation was about more than just a boat.
