City enforces action amid Cullen Park Apartments issues

At City Hall on Wednesday, council members said the problems at Cullen Park have also raised red flags about another Marquis Group property.

HOUSTON — City leaders say they’re stepping up enforcement after weeks of complaints from residents at the Cullen Park Apartments in Sunnyside.

Residents of the Cullen Park Apartments sent us videos of dozens of rats running rampant in the complex, but that only scratched the surface. They say there have also been plumbing problems, mold and fire hazards.

For more than a week, KHOU 11 has been reporting on tenants’ concerns. This week, state inspectors and federal housing officials visited the property to check for potential health violations and compliance issues.

KHOU 11 also confirmed that the Marquis Group, which manages the property, fired the on-site manager following the complaints.

At City Hall on Wednesday, council members said the problems at Cullen Park have also raised red flags about another Marquis Group property.

“We are coming for you,” said District D Councilwoman Carolyn Evans-Shabazz. “All we need is reports and then we’re going to come for you to make sure you are in compliance.”

Representatives for the Marquis Group said repairs are already underway. They also urged residents to do their part in keeping common areas clean to help prevent rodent problems.
