Ten people were hurt when a chase ended in two crashes at the intersection of West Gray and Waugh, Texas DPS said.
HOUSTON — Several people were hurt when a chase ended in two crashes early Sunday morning, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The crash came to an end around 1:40 a.m. at the intersection of Waugh Drive and West Gray Street in west Houston.
“It’s a pretty big scene,” Sgt. Steven Hemphill with Texas DPS said. “Just before [the suspect driver] approached the intersection, he struck a vehicle that happened to be an Uber driver in transport of two other passengers.”
Hemphill said all three people in the rideshare were injured but refused transport from EMS.
Right after the crash, DPS said the suspect kept driving and crashed into another vehicle that was carrying seven people. Those seven were taken to an area hospital for treatment.
In the second crash, the suspect was launched from his car, but didn’t suffer any serious injuries, Hemphill said. He was taken into custody and taken to an area hospital.
Hemphill said it didn’t appear that there were any major injuries in the crashes.
We don’t know what caused the initial chase, but DPS said the driver faces two evading charges and potentially an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge stemming from the chase.
Hemphill said a handgun was recovered from the scene.
“He had no regard for the safety of others or himself,” Hemphill said. “He went into oncoming traffic and regardless of what color the lights were, he went ahead and chose to barrel through the intersection and risk his life along with the lives of others.”
DPS said the Harris County Sheriff’s Office helped them in the chase.
