Cedar Hill ISD appoints Dr. Maria Gamell as its first female superintendent.
CEDAR HILL, Texas — After naming its lone finalist earlier this month, Cedar Hill ISD officially named its new superintendent.
On Thursday, the CHISD Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Dr. Maria Gamell as the district’s new Superintendent of Schools. According to CHISD, Gamell has 24 years of experience in education; most recently serving as Chief Human Resources Officer for Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD in Tarrant County. Before that role, Dr. Gamell also served as a principal.
Dr. Gamell makes CHISD history as the first-ever woman to hold the superintendent position.
“It is an honor to join a district that is so clearly committed to excellence for every student,” Dr. Gamell said in a district release. “Together with our dedicated educators, staff, families, and community partners, I look forward to building on the district’s strong foundation and achieving even greater success.”
Gamell succeeds former CHISD Superintendent Dr. Gerald Hudson, who had led the district since 2019, when the district’s previous superintendent, Billy Snow, resigned amid an investigation into an undisclosed allegation against him.
Dr. Hudson will officially resign on June 30, but will stick around in the district as Superintendent Emeritus through June 30, 2026.
Dr. Gamell’s first day will be July 1.
