CapMetro is changing how it responds to bad behavior

AUSTIN (KXAN) – CapMetro is changing its Code of Conduct, giving staff more authority to handle unruly passengers. The agency says the move is meant to create a “safer, more respectful environment.”

Under the new rules, customers who engage in disruptive or disrespectful behavior can now be suspended from using the system. Riders who break the law may also face citations.

Operators now have more authority to enforce the rules consistently. If a passenger violates the Code of Conduct, drivers can briefly pause service and call a supervisor, when safe to do so, to handle the situation.

The agency says the update comes after a comprehensive review to make riders and employees feel safer.

On its website, the agency outlines prohibited activities on CapMetro transit, including the following:

  • Threatening, aggressive or violent behavior toward staff or passengers
  • Boarding with large items such as shopping carts (personal belongings and luggage are allowed if controlled by the owner and kept clear of aisles)
  • Disruptive behavior or noise, such as profanity, horseplay, performing personal hygiene, or playing loud audio or video
  • Boarding without shoes or appropriate clothing, or in clothing visibly soiled with bodily fluids or excrement
  • Boarding with uncovered wounds or visible infestations.

CapMetro also says if you see anyone breaking the rules, you can report it to any nearby CapMetro workers or by calling the CapMetro GO Line at 512-474-1200.

The changes come just a few months after the agency swore in its first class of transit police officers.
