Campers missing in Central Texas floodwaters

“I immediately tried to call her and my brother-in-law, and my niece. No answer.”

KERRVILLE, Texas — To say Joy Meyers is worried would be an understatement.

“It’s hard for me to believe it’s happening to my family,” she said.

Meyers, who lives in Mont Belvieu, is hoping her sister and other family members who were camping directly next to the Guadalupe River are found soon. The youngest in the group is 5 years old.

“I immediately tried to call her and my brother-in-law and my niece. No answer,” she said.

Since early Friday morning, she tried to get in touch with her sister, DeeAnn Knetsch, and her brother-in-law, Gary Knetsch.

“They were camping. He (Gary) posted a picture on Facebook yesterday (Thursday) and it was nice and peaceful and quiet and I was going to give her a call this morning,” Meyers said.

Also camping with DeeAnn and Gary were their son, Jake Moeller, his wife, Megan, and the couple’s 5-year-old daughter, Harley.

“It’s been horrible. You try to remain very hopeful, but as the hours pass, it … you know. … The first couple of hours you’re like, OK, she’ll call. You know, because she knows we’re looking for her and her daughter’s looking for her but as the day’s pass …” Meyers said.

Meyers’ niece is in Kerrville looking for her mom and has been to the campsite next to the river where the group spent the night.

“There was just a 20- or 30-foot wall of water that came through there,” Meyers said.

Without any news of her family, all Meyers can do is hope and pray.

“I hope they’re all hanging out in a tree. I’m hoping they’re all together,” she said.

Meyers is asking anyone who might have seen her family in the area to call authorities or TV stations so they can be reunited.
