Austin FC, other organizations dedicate new soccer field to Huston-Tillotson University

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Student athletes at Huston-Tillotson University will now be able to practice soccer on campus.

This comes after Austin FC, 4ATX Foundation and Major League Soccer dedicated a “newly-refurbished soccer pitch” at the university, according to a news release from Austin FC. The dedication happened Friday.

“The grand re-opening of the pitch included soccer scrimmages featuring HT alumni, current student-athletes, and local young players,” Austin FC said in the release.

Additionally, a featured mural can be seen on the building directly adjacent to the field by “renowned artist and longtime Austin FC collaborator, Rex Hamilton.”

The project was completed by Verde Pitch Alliance, which is “a group of Central Texas organizations working together to expand access to soccer for all,” according to the Austin FC website.

“With an initial $2 million collective investment, we are bringing more free and public soccer spaces to our Soccer City,” Verde Pitch Alliance said.

The release said men’s and women’s soccer teams with the university previously had to travel to other fields across Austin to practice. With this new field, Austin FC said it will be “a future host site for 4ATX Foundation programming, further strengthening the existing relationship between 4ATX and HT.”

“This upgraded soccer field is a transformative step for our campus and community,” said Dr. Melva K. Wallace, President of Huston-Tillotson University, in the release. “Thanks to the partnership and generosity of Austin FC, 4ATX Foundation, and Major League Soccer, our student-athletes, as well as other student-athletes and soccer enthusiasts in an around our community, now have a dedicated and easily-accessible space to train and compete.”
