Atascocita couple who died in Texas floods remembered by friends, coworkers

We’re told Rob and Melissa Kamin, who recently welcomed their first grandbaby, were generous, faithful, and loved the outdoors.

HUMBLE, Texas — Under a somber sky on Wednesday morning, coworkers and friends held a subdued ceremony and balloon release in memory of Melissa Kamin and her husband, Rob. The Atascocita couple died in the Texas Hill Country floods on July 4.

Melissa was a physical therapy assistant at Deerbrook Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Humble.

“She was a dear friend of mine,” coworker Elayne Ramirez said.

Ramirez knew firsthand how Melissa touched lives well beyond work.

“Very kind, their family took me and my family in last year with Hurricane Beryl,” Ramirez said.

She recalled their very last conversation.

“Last week, my last words were to her on the text message that said ‘get some rest, woman of God,” Ramirez told KHOU 11.  “Those were my last words, and our hope is in him, absent in the body is present with the Lord.”

We’re told the couple, who recently welcomed their first grandbaby, loved the outdoors, though Melissa still had nursing home residents in mind as she planned what would be her final trip.

“Before she left to go to the Hill Country, she went to Walmart to get things for her trip,” colleague Kim Cornejo said.  “And she brought this resident back some Crystal Light because she knew she loved Crystal Light. So, just acts of love above and beyond, that’s who she was.”

Right now, the Kamin family is asking for privacy as coworkers who became friends keep Rob and Melissa in their thoughts.

“Like I told her mother, that she may be absent in the body, but in spirit, she’s here,” Jorri Henderson said. “And she will always be with us in our hearts.”
