The Astros shortstop was hit by a pitch Friday against the Cubs and didn’t play Saturday or Sunday.
HOUSTON — The Astros keep winning despite mounting injuries and on Monday, they learned of another key player who will be out for a while.
According to a release from the team sent out on Monday, shortstop Jeremy Peña was placed on the 10-day injured list after a small fracture was found in one of the ribs on his left side. Peña was hit by a pitch Friday night in the second inning by Cubs’ pitcher Cade Horton and didn’t return. He also sat out the Saturday and Sunday games against Chicago.
X-rays on Friday night didn’t show the fracture, but the team said more imaging revealed the fracture.
So far through 82 games, the former World Series MVP is hitting .322 with 11 home runs and 48 RBIs. He’s also got 48 runs scored and 15 stolen bases on the season.
The Astros said they’ll announce another roster move to take his place on Tuesday as the team heads to Colorado to take on the Rockies in a three-game series.
Despite the injuries, Houston remains one of the top teams in the Majors. The Astros are 50-34 and hold a 6.5-game lead over Seattle in the AL West. They have the third-best record in baseball behind the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers.
