APD: 25-year-old charged with murder for killing man in drive-by shooting

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man accused of killing 20-year-old Comarri Thompson in a drive-by shooting on July 19 near East Braker Lane and Dessau Road was arrested Thursday by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, an Austin Police Department news release said.

Kenan Greene, 25, was booked into the Travis County jail and faces a murder charge, which is a first-degree felony, according to APD. Greene’s arrest comes after a warrant was filed on Wednesday, APD said.

Just after 2 a.m. on July 19, Austin police responded to a shoot/stab hotshot call at 804 East Braker Lane. A woman — later identified as Thompson’s girlfriend — called police to report that she was shot and “someone was dead,” APD said. When officers arrived, they found the caller and Thompson, both with gunshot wounds.

Responding medics attempted life saving measures, but were unsuccessful, according to APD. Thompson died because of his gunshot wounds, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

APD said the investigation showed the couple were in a vehicle at Braker Lane and Dessau Road when a white vehicle pulled up next to them and “shot multiple times into their car, killing Thompson.”

A prior feud in March 2025 on social media between Thompson and another person may have led to his murder, and according to an affidavit obtained by KXAN, it could have been gang related.

The affidavit revealed Thompson texted this person: “Monte dead as a [expletive] n his killers still walking around here” — referencing a different gang-associated murder. Austin Police Gang Unit detectives believe he implied to this person that his “associates were weak for not retaliating,” which then led to a violent retaliation against Thompson as a result of the disrespect.

This case marks Austin’s 34th homicide of 2025. KXAN tracks the number of homicides in Austin and that data can be found here.
