According to court documents, the victim was followed home from the Lucky J Social Club on Richmond and robbed in his garage.
HOUSTON — Police believe three suspects accused of following a man home and robbing him had been casing a southwest Houston poker club that night.
The 70-year-old victim was robbed in his garage after leaving the Lucky J Social Club on Richmond Avenue near Ocee Street.
According to court documents, the suspects ambushed the man and tried to grab his wallet. The victim’s wife screamed and that scared them away.
They sped off but crashed their car, and then tried to escape on foot.
Police arrested 23-year-old Jayden Christopher Batiste, 23-year-old Exavier Dwayne Brown and 24-year-old Keyveon Montae Thompson.
All three are charged with aggravated robbery of a person over 65.
Police say they’d been circling the poker club the night of the robbery.
Poker player beaten, robbed at Galleria-area hotel
Another poker player who was ambushed and robbed last week shared his frightening story with KHOU 11. The whole thing was caught on camera.
The victim, who didn’t want to appear on camera, had just returned to the Double Tree Hotel on Westheimer near Sage after playing poker nearby.
He felt uneasy when the suspects’ car parked next to him, so he alerted hotel employees.
“When the security guard came, he said, ‘I got you. Ain’t nothing going to happen to you,’” Bryton said. “He scanned me to go to the hotel. And it locked—I didn’t think nobody was going to get in there.”
But moments after checking in, he was attacked.
“I thought they were fixing to kill me, and I was going to fight back,” he said. “I didn’t do nothing. I didn’t see that security, hear him or see him come.”
Surveillance video showed two men, one with a white mask over his face, walking into the hotel.
Bryton shared photos of his injuries, which KHOU 11 has chosen not to air due to their graphic nature. He says bones around his eye are broken and that he now needs surgery.
“I hope my eye isn’t permanent,” he said. “My vision is blurred on the right side. Real bad headaches.”
“It’s going to catch up with them. I don’t want to do nothing to them,” Bryton said. “I don’t think they should be doing that kind of stuff.”
The robbers got away with thousands of dollars, jewelry and designer bags.
They sped away in a white four-door sedan.
No arrests have been made in this case.
