Annual economic development report highlights job creation and small business programs

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The city of Austin’s Economic Development Department (EDD) said it supported more than 27,000 jobs through its programs and services in 2024.

The department said it organized its work last year around three pillars:

  • Create and retain jobs
  • Amplify creative industries
  • Build equitable, accessible and affordable communities

When it comes to creating and retaining jobs, the EDD said a vital part of that was the launch of the Austin Infrastructure Academy. The goal is to help build a local pipeline of workers for major construction and transportation projects in the region.

“Developed in collaboration with Travis County, Workforce Solutions Capital Area, and Austin Community College, this one-of-a-kind public-private training hub provides comprehensive skills training and crucial child care support–removing barriers so working families can participate,” the report said.

As a result of its workforce programs in 2024, the EDD said 286 residents received specialized job training in high-demand fields. The department said 153 graduates also secured self-sustaining wages upon program completion.

Along with it different programs, the EDD also offered classes and workshops for small businesses. The report said in total, its small business programs provided one-on-one coaching, training or resources to more than 4,500 entrepreneurs in Austin.

Moving forward, the EDD said it will attract new partnerships and investment.
