FERRIS, Texas — A young child gained access to a gun on Saturday before fatally shooting another child, Ferris police said. An adult man who initially left the scene is in police custody in connection with the shooting.
The shooting occurred Saturday in the Shaw Creek neighborhood near Tidwell Drive, the Ferris Police Department said in a social media post. Investigators found that a very young child gained access to a firearm inside a residence and fatally shot another young child, officials said.
An adult man who initially left the scene was located and is now in custody, police said. The Ferris Department of Public Safety is working alongside the Texas Rangers, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ellis County District Attorney’s Office to investigate the incident.
“Our hearts are with the child, the family, and everyone impacted by this devastating loss,” the department said.
Criminal charges are pending in connection with possession of the firearm, the accessibility of the firearm to a child, and actions taken after the incident, the post states.
This is an active investigation, police said.
