A South Dakota trust just won a $78 million Texas Lottery jackpot. Here’s how

The winning ticket was bought in Brownsville back in November, and the prize was claimed just days before the ticket was set to expire

AUSTIN, Texas — A South Dakota trust company has claimed a $78 million jackpot six days before the winning ticket was due to expire, according to The Texas Lottery.

Jua-Ri Trust Agreement Trident Trust Company Inc, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, claimed the ticket for the drawing held on November 15, 2025. Lottery officials say the company chose to take the cash value option and received $43,757,223.10 before taxes.

The winning ticket was purchased at Gordon’s Bait & Tackle, located at 7066 Padre Island Highway in Brownsville.

The prize was claimed on May 8, just six days before the winning ticket was due to expire. Texas Lottery rules say a ticket holder loses any claim to a prize 180 days after a draw date. For the November 15, 2025, Lotto Texas drawing, the claim deadline was May 14.

It’s not uncommon for lottery winners to establish a trust before claiming a prize to maintain anonymity when claiming a lottery prize.

The winning jackpot started as an advertised $5 million prize for the drawing on February 19, 2025, and went through a record 116 drawings before the win on November 15. Texas Lottery officials say the advertised $78 million was the sixth-largest jackpot in Lotto Texas history.
