A Dallas-based private Christian university just gave R&B singer Chris Brown an honorary doctorate

Harvest Christian University awarded Brown with an honorary Ph.D. in visual and performing arts.

DALLAS — It’s been a big year for Chris Brown, who received multiple Grammy nominations, is going on a stadium tour with Usher, and on Saturday, was awarded an honorary doctorate from a Dallas-based private Christian university.

Brown made the announcement in a post on his Instagram page, simply commenting “I DID A THING!”

His diploma is pictured in the post. Awarded to him by Harvest Christian University, the honorary degree was a Ph.D. in visual and performing arts.

According to Complex, HCU gave Brown the award to celebrate Brown’s contributions to the music industry as one of the most successful and influential R&B singers the past two decades.

Since pleading guilty to felony assault in 2009, Brown has seen tremendous success in the music industry — releasing multiple commercially successful albums, winning Best R&B Album at the Grammys twice, and headlining multiple world tours.

Brown isn’t the first celebrity to be honored by HCU. The school has awarded hundreds of honorary degrees. Just last year, rapper Busta Rhymes received an honorary doctorate from the school as well. Other celebrities given honorary degrees by the school include Cedric the Entertainer, Bernie Mac and former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin.

While HCU asserts on its website that it has a “royal charter accreditation,” no institutional accrediting agency recognized by the Department of Education has given the university accreditation.

Brown, along with Usher, will be back in DFW Sept. 10-13, as he and Usher will perform three shows at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
