A bullet from outside struck a woman inside her Bear Creek home. Now, a teen is charged.

Joanne Bennett was in her kitchen cleaning when she was shot in her stomach. Investigators believe the teen was outside in a lot firing.

HOUSTON — A teenager is charged in the death of an 84-year-old woman who was hit by a stray bullet while cleaning her kitchen.

It happened back in March in the Bear Creek area. Investigators say 19-year-old Joshua Ramos was firing a gun in a lot off Addicks Satsuma Road. One of those shots went into a nearby home across Langham Creek.

Inside that home, Joanne Bennett was cleaning up in the kitchen before going to bed, according to her husband. She was struck in the stomach.

Her husband didn’t want to go on camera, but told KHOU 11 that the bullet came in through the window. Bennett died from her injuries a few weeks later.

Investigators later identified Ramos as the person who had allegedly been randomly shooting in this highly populated area.

“84-year-old woman that lived her entire life with her husband, and this is how you end up going,” said Andy Kahan with Crime Stoppers of Houston. “I mean, it’s just absolutely cruel and it’s horrific. And now you got a young person that’s looking at a potential two to 20 years in prison and for what?”

Kahan happens to live in this very same area. He says this is similar to celebratory gunfire issues we often cover involving innocent victims who get shot because of someone else’s reckless behavior.
