Arlington PD: Suspect in fatal apartment shooting charged with capital murder

The 24-year-old suspect is accused of shooting and killing a 19-year-old earlier this month at an Arlington apartment complex.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Arlington police have arrested a 24-year-old suspect in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man earlier this month at an apartment complex and charged him with capital murder, officials say.

The suspect, Jahlen Owen, was arrested Sunday at the Ott Cribbs Public Safety Center. He is accused of shooting and killing Desmond McKay on June 2 in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 2700 block of Castle Gardens Drive.

Police say detectives learned the night of the shooting that McKay had told people he was hanging out with a friend from welding school, who they later identified as Owen.

Detectives believe the two traveled to the Castle Gardens Drive location in McKay’s car to pick up another friend there, officials say, and the shooting occurred before making it to the friend’s apartment.

Witnesses reported the shooter leaving the scene in McKay’s car immediately after the shooting. The car was found the next day in Dallas, which police later learned was across the street from Owen’s home.

Detectives continued pursuing leads involving Owen, police say, and on June 29, Owen reportedly came to the public safety center and told the front desk officer he wanted to talk with detectives about the case.

Police say Owen spoke with detectives voluntarily and confessed to the shooting, providing several corroborating details. At that point, Owen was taken into custody.

Owen was booked into the Arlington City Jail but was later transferred to the Tarrant County Jail. Records show Owen has a $1 million bond.
