Chase ends in crash at Telephone and Dixie after carjacking, HPD says

Police said the suspect hid in the bed of the victim’s pickup truck to follow him home.

HOUSTON — A man is in custody after police said he attempted to rob and carjack another man before leading officers on a chase in southeast Houston early Sunday morning.

The incident happened around midnight when officers were sent to an aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping call on Broadway Street near Bellfort Avenue.

The Houston Police Department said the victim was withdrawing money from an ATM when the suspect snuck into the bed of his truck. The man then drove home.

That’s when police said the suspect got out of the truck bed and came up to the victim with a gun, demanding his keys, money and phone. HPD said the victim was hesitant and the suspect forced him back into the car before driving off. The suspect dropped the victim off about half a mile from the home.

Houston police found the truck shortly after and attempted a traffic stop, which led to a brief chase.

The chase came to an end with a crash at the intersection of Telephone Road and Dixie Drive. HPD said the suspect was speeding and drifted into oncoming traffic before slamming into another car.

Three people in the other car were taken to a hospital and are expected to be OK.

The suspect was taken into custody before being brought to a hospital. He’s also expected to be OK.
