GM recalls 62K Chevy Silverado trucks for brake defect

GM is advising owners of some Chevy Silverado trucks to park their vehicles outside and away from buildings until repairs are completed.

DETROIT — General Motors is recalling about 62,500 Chevrolet Silverado trucks due to a brake system defect that could cause fires, federal safety regulators announced Thursday.

The recall affects certain 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD medium-duty vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the brake pressure sensor assembly may leak brake fluid into the brake pressure switch, causing an electrical short circuit.

The short circuit can overheat the brake system and increase the risk of fire while driving or when parked, according to NHTSA documents.

GM is advising owners to park their vehicles outside and away from buildings until repairs are completed. The company will replace the brake pressure switch wire harness at no cost to owners.

The Detroit automaker plans to mail initial safety notices to affected owners July 28, followed by a second letter once replacement parts become available. Owners can contact GM customer service at 1-866-467-9700 with questions about the recall.

Some vehicles covered by this recall were previously repaired under a 2023 recall for a related issue, but those trucks will need the new remedy as well, NHTSA said.

The recall number is 25V390. Owners can check if their vehicle is affected by visiting nhtsa.gov or calling the agency’s vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
