Fort Bend County authorizes Diwali fireworks sales

“This order reinforces our commitment to inclusion and cultural recognition,” said Commissioner Dexter L. McCoy.

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas — Fort Bend County will allow the sale of fireworks for Diwali, or the “Festival of Lights,” for the next five years after approval from commissioners court.

The approval will allow permitted retailers to sell fireworks legally from October 12, 2025 through midnight on October 22, 2025. An amendment by Commissioner Dexter L. McCoy let the county authorize the sales annually through 2030.

“Fort Bend County is proud to support our diverse communities by allowing families to celebrate Diwali with this cherished cultural tradition,” McCoy said in a news release. “This order reinforces our commitment to inclusion and cultural recognition.”

Fireworks sales are only authorized in unincorporated areas of Fort Bend County.

The sales may be halted depending on drought conditions determined by the Texas A&M Forest Service.

McCoy said the Fort Bend County Fire Marshal will work with retailers to ensure safety guidelines are being followed.

He said the approval will get rid of the need for families to store fireworks in their homes following the 4th of July for Diwali.
