JetBlue ending flights to Miami, deeming the route ‘unprofitable’

The soon-to-be axed route was added in 2021 to grow the airline’s presence in South Florida.

WASHINGTON — JetBlue has announced it will end all routes to Miami starting in September.

The airline, which currently has one or two daily flights to the major vacation destination from Boston, said it was ending its service due to low performance. While Miami will be out of the picture starting on Sept. 3, the airline will still continue to offer flights to nearby Florida airports like Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

“We continually evaluate how our network is performing and make changes as needed,” a JetBlue spokesperson said in a statement. “To free aircraft for new routes, we’ve recently made the decision to end a small number of unprofitable flights including between Boston and Miami.”

JetBlue passengers who booked future flights to the Florida city after Sept. 3, will have the option to fly to Ft. Lauderdale or receive a full refund to their original form of payment, according to the spokesperson. According to the Miami Herald, the airline informed Miami International Airport of the service changes on Friday afternoon.

The Boston-Miami route had been JetBlue’s last service to the vacation hub.

JetBlue began offering flights to Miami in 2021 to grow its presence in South Florida during the post-pandemic travel boom. At one point, JetBlue offered 14 daily flights to Miami from other hubs like New Jersey, Connecticut, New York City and Los Angeles. The airline has been trimming its Miami service over the years.

JetBlue is the second largest carrier at Ft. Lauderdale’s airport, behind Spirit, the Miami Herald reported.

The announcement comes weeks after JetBlue announced a new partnership with United Airlines. Under the terms of the new agreement, JetBlue will give United access to slots at JFK International Airport in New York City for up to seven daily round-trip flights starting in 2027, the AP reported.
