Leon County deputy injured after shots fired during standoff

LEON COUNTY, Texas (FOX 44) – An investigation is underway following a standoff between the Texas Department of Public Safety, or DPS, and a now-deceased suspect, who law enforcement sources said killed both his parents and opened fire on a Leon County Sheriff’s deputy.

The Leon County Sheriff’s Office received a call Saturday that an a allegedly suicidal subject had killed his parents. Shortly after, deputies arrived to the 21000 block of County Road 456 in Normangee, Texas, to perform a welfare check.

Deputies attempted to contact someone in the residence when the suspect, identified as 38 year-old James Scott Grigory, shot and struck a deputy twice, once in the face and once in the arm. The injured deputy was transported by helicopter for medical treatment.

A perimeter was immediately set and additional law enforcement agencies from the region came to assist. A reverse 911 was sent out to citizens in the area to shelter in place. Texas DPS, with a SWAT team and the Texas Rangers, arrived and took over the scene in Leon County.

According to a Facebook post by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, a welfare concern was conducted at a residence in the 11700 block of Hillbrook Drive in Harris County, where Grigory’s mother was found deceased with apparent gunshot wounds.

The standoff with the barricaded suspect ended Sunday morning when DPS SWAT made entry into the Leon County residence. Upon entry, responders found Grigory’s father and two dogs were dead from apparent gunshot wounds. They also found Grigory deceased from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Gonzalez said that the deputy is expected to survive and is currently being treated. The Texas Municipal Police Association released a statement on Facebook, possibly in connection with the incident, stating, “Yesterday, a Leon County Deputy was shot in the face and airlifted to Temple. Their condition remains unknown at this time.”

The Texas Rangers will investigate the Leon County incident.
