EL CAMPO, Texas — A hazmat situation in El Campo involving a chlorine tanker fire is now under control, according to the Wharton County Office of Emergency Management.
The incident began Monday morning when a semi-truck tanker carrying chlorine caught fire near Highway 59 and Palacios Street. Emergency crews from multiple agencies, including the Fort Bend County Hazmat Regional Response Team and the El Campo Fire Department, responded to the scene.
Officials said the chlorine leak posed potential health risks, but crews worked quickly to contain it and prevent further danger.

- Southbound alternate: Use FM 1300 or FM 1163 west to Highway 71, then head south to reconnect with US 59.
- Local detour: Within city limits, use Business 59 or Avenue I to bypass the affected area near Palacios Street.
