Mesquite police say they’re investigating the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old.
MESQUITE, Texas — Investigators with the Mesquite Police Department are working to determine whether charges will be filed in connection with a fatal shooting early Sunday.
Officers responded to multiple reports of a fight in a parking lot in the 2800 block of Franklin Drive around 12:58 a.m., according to a news release from the department. Witnesses told police the altercation led to an exchange of gunfire between a suspect and another person, identified as 23-year-old Kemarius Mack.
Despite life-saving efforts by a witness and responding officers, Mack died at the hospital shortly after the shooting, police said.
The suspect immediately contacted police, claiming the shooting was in self-defense, according to the release. Investigators collected evidence that they say will be analyzed as the investigation continues.
Police said the case will be presented to a Dallas County grand jury, regardless of whether charges are filed.
The department, in the news release, also addressed questions surrounding the aid officers provided to Mack following the shooting.
“We want to clarify that officers arriving on scene did in fact provide medical assistance that extended beyond CPR,” Mesquite PD said in the release. “This included the application of a chest seal and continued life-saving measures, all while managing a tense and unpredictable scene.”
According to police, while officers were aiding Mack, one person was arrested at the scene for interfering with public duties.
