North Texas’ newest planned commercial airport is getting more upgrades

The McKinney City Council accepted a $7 million grant tied to improvements to one of its taxiways.

MCKINNEY, Texas — Improvements to the McKinney National Airport received a funding boost from a state grant Tuesday.

The McKinney City Council approved a resolution Tuesday to accept a $7 million grant from the Texas Department of Transportation and approve a contract for engineering services related to the second phase of improvements for one of the airport’s taxiways.

In May, the city approved several construction contracts, clearing the runway for $72 million project to expand the airport. The city’s goal is to see the first commercial flights take off from the airport in 2026, making McKinney the third commercial airport in the region, WFAA previously reported.

The city will contribute nearly $2 million to the taxiway project, according to a press release from the city. With the state’s contribution, the $8.9 million is set to move forward, the release states.

Taxiway A is located on the west side of the airport and is being rehabilitated because its pavement is at the end of its service life, the release states. The project includes rehabilitating the old pavement, constructing a new taxiway connector, removing the old connector and making grading and drainage improvements.

“Completing the southern portion of the Taxiway A rehabilitation project will deliver important benefits for our airport users and community,” said Director Kenneth Carley, TKI Airport. “We thank TxDOT for its sizable grant, which is funding 82 percent of this critical airfield investment at TKI.”

Phase one of construction is currently underway, and phase two is expected to begin in spring 2027, the release states.
