Houston police have arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting his girlfriend in a southeast Houston apartment after a lengthy search.
HOUSTON — A man accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend inside a southeast Houston apartment is now in custody after an hours-long search, according to Houston police.
Houston police said the investigation is still active on McHenry Street as they work to piece together the events that led to the deadly violence.
According to HPD, it all started around 9 p.m. Tuesday when officers responded to a shooting at an apartment complex on McHenry. Police say a man was shot, and then about an hour later, a second call came in reporting a woman had been shot as well. While detectives are still working to determine the order of events, they say the two shootings appear to be unrelated.
The woman, who was identified by family as the suspect’s girlfriend, was found dead inside an apartment by HPD SWAT officers. Investigators said the suspect had sent his sister a photo of the victim, which prompted her to call 911. Family members also shared a disturbing message that came after the photo.
“He told her he was on his way to get her family next, so at that point, that’s when we got our parents out of their home because he knows where they live,” said Shatina Thompson, the victim’s sister.
HPD said the suspect was eventually found around 3 a.m. near Willowbrook in the FM 1960 area after officers checked multiple locations overnight.
“You don’t want to downplay anything. But the biggest thing right now is their safety is secure right now because he’s in custody,” said HPD Officer Juan Diaz.
Police said the suspect may have mental health issues and may not have been taking his medication. He is currently in custody and being questioned as the investigation continues.
