Houston police add two freeways to crackdown on aggressive driving

In a message posted to X on Monday, Mayor Whitmire said police would be looking for aggressive drivers on the South Loop and 288.

HOUSTON — Last week, we reported on an initiative by the city of Houston to crack down on aggressive drivers. The focus on the initiative was I-45 and Highway 59.

According to the city, the crackdown has been a success, with more than 300 tickets handed out for aggressive driving in just a few days. It was so successful that the city is now going to expand it. Starting on Tuesday, the city is also going to step up patrols on Highway 288 and the South Loop.

“We want everybody to know it,” said Houston Mayor John Whitmire in a post on X Monday. “We take road rage, speeding, DWI very serious, and we’ve listened to Houstonians. I see the speeding and reckless driving, so we’re gonna go around the city with surges, a lot of citations, but mostly we want the results of people slowing down and driving responsibly.”

In our report last week, Houston police said there had already been at least 30 reported cases of road rage and aggravated assault on 45 and 9 in 2025..

Houston police say the initiative involves not just enhanced enforcement but also community outreach.

Police ask that drivers continue to report aggressive behavior on the roads.
