Bail set at $5 million for man who allegedly killed MN lawmaker and her husband

Boelter is charged with shooting and killing a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband in Brooklyn Park.

HENNEPIN COUNTY, Minn. — Vance Boelter is jailed with a $5 million bail after allegedly shooting two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses early Saturday morning.

Boelter allegedly shot and killed Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in their Brooklyn Park home in what officials called a targeted shooting. Prosecutors say Boelter also shot Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, at their home in Champlin. They both survived and are awake after surgery.

Boelter, 57, is charged with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder after he was taken into custody Sunday night. The killings triggered the largest manhunt in state history, according to officials.

KARE 11’s Lou Raguse says Boelter’s charges will likely be upgraded to first-degree by a grand jury. He was booked into Hennepin County Jail at 1:02 a.m. on Monday.

Bail was set at $5 million, according to Hennepin County.
