Authorities are searching in Sibley County Sunday night for a man suspected of shooting two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses, killing one couple and wounding the other.
Officials have identified the suspect as 57-year-old Vance Boelter, who lives in Green Isle and part-time in north Minneapolis. A hat believed to be the same he had been wearing was found on the side of the road in Faxon Township in the same area his black Buick sedan was found abandoned, off Highway 25 and 301 Avenue.
Boelter is a suspect in the killing of Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the severe injury of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.
At a press conference Sunday evening, officials said they have over a hundred officers in Sibley County.
Minnesota BCA Superintendent Drew Evans was asked in the press conference about what items were found in the car. He did not give specifics, but said the items were relevant to their investigation. He was also asked how Boelter is now traveling if he doesn’t have his car. Evans said, “We have not concluded exactly how he is getting around the area.”
Evans said there is a nationwide search warrant for Boelter’s arrest for the murders and attempted murders, as well as a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Evans also spoke to the media about a manifesto found from Boelter in a lawmaker’s home; however, he said this was not a “treatise on all kinds of ideology” but a notebook with a list of names of lawmakers and “other thoughts.” He would not provide any more details because of the ongoing investigation.
The Mayor of Champlin, Ryan Sabas, also spoke at the press conference, saying they are anxiously awaiting news of justice. Brooklyn Park Mayor Hollies J. Winston said he thanks law enforcement for their pursuit of justice.
“There is some healing that needs to be done here,” he said.
