Erykah Badu releasing first album in over a decade on her own label

The new album will be the first for Erykah Badu in 15 years.

DALLAS — Dallas’ own Queen of Neo Soul, Erykah Badu, is set to release her first new album in more than a decade — this time through her own label.

Badu shared that she was working on new music in an interview with Billboard in March, in which she said that her new album would be produced by noted hip hop producer The Alchemist, who’s worked with the likes of Lil Wayne and Kendrick Lamar.

In a new press release, Badu, who signed with Motown Records in 2007, revealed that her new music would be released independently on her own label, Control FREAQ Records. She’ll release a single ahead of the album this summer.

“Through Control FREAQ Records, Badu is reclaiming her narrative, her sound, and her freedom. Badu’s return to the music scene promises to deliver her signature blend of insightful lyrics, captivating melodies, and innovative sounds. Fans can look forward to a fresh array of tracks that reflect her personal experiences, artistic evolution, and commitment to artistic integrity,” the press release states. “Control FREAQ Records—originally established in 2005—is not just a label; it represents Badu’s desire to foster creativity and innovation in the music industry. By establishing her own platform, she aims to empower fellow artists and collaborators to share their voices and stories without constraint.”

The album will be the first for the Grammy winner in 15 years.

She released her fifth studio album “New Amerykah Part Two: Return of The Ankh” in 2010. It was a sequel to 2008’s politically tinged “New Amerykah Part One: (4th World War).”

Badu released her acclaimed debut album “Baduizm” in 1997 with hits like “On & On,” “Next Lifetime” and “Appletree.”

Aside from her studio albums, she’s also released a live album and mixtape during her career.
