Houston ISD extends Mike Miles’ contract for five years after unanimous board vote.
HOUSTON — Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles will remain in charge of the state’s largest school district for at least five more years.
During a late-night meeting on Thursday, the district’s Board of Managers unanimously approved an extended employment contract for Miles.
The decision came after a packed public comment session and on the same night the board approved a nearly $2.1 billion budget, just ahead of the state’s July 1 deadline.

Public pushback over transparency, leadership changes
More than 127 people signed up to speak during the meeting, many raising concerns about transparency and accountability within the district’s leadership.
The criticism follows the removal of four HISD Board of Managers members at the end of the school year. The Texas Education Agency has since appointed new members, who are now wrapping up their first week on the board.
What we know about the new contract
Details of Superintendent Mike Miles’ amended contract were discussed during a closed session. The board then voted unanimously to approve the terms.
“I move that the board approve the terms of the Amended and Restated Employment contract of Mike Miles on the terms discussed in closed session. Your second.”
Not everyone was on board with the decision. One parent expressed frustration during public comment:
“It’s not about doing a job well; it’s about glad-handing and slaps on the back from Abbott and Morath.”
According to HISD, the full contract will be posted on the district’s website by 5 p.m. Friday.
The next HISD Board of Managers meeting is scheduled for August, at the start of the new school year.
