Group gathers to support AISD schools with F ratings

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A grassroots community group known as “ATX United for Public Schools” says their rights to participate in Austin ISD’s turnaround plans have been violated.

The group planned to hold a rally Thursday to support the communities of Burnet, Dobie and Webb Middle Schools, which each are set to receive their third consecutive failing accountability score.

In April, Austin ISD warned district families that the Texas Education Agency could intervene if these scores are not improved.

On the district’s Trunaround FAQ’s page they said, “In order to significantly improve student achievement in a short time period, the district is proposing a district-managed restart plan at Burnet, Dobie and Webb.”

The district must submit a turnaround plan for Dobie to the Texas Education Agency by June 30, 2025.

ATX United for Public Schools said AISD has carried out a rushed process, including reassigning teachers and administrators.

The group said it opposes charter and TEA takeovers while demanding AISD put students, parents and staff in charge of any turnaround plans or changes to their schools.

This is a developing story. KXAN will have more updates after the rally tonight.
